Named after the botanist Karl Ivanovich Maximowich (1827-1891), curator of the Saint Petersburg Botanical Garden's Herbarium, Primula maximowiczii belongs to the Crystallophlomis section (Primula sect. Crystallophlomis).

This Asian primrose is native to China and Japan and forms rosettes with oblong leaves and has a spring flowering (April-May) in umbels of tubular brick-red blooms.

Height of the foliage: 5 cm. Height of the umbels: 30 cm

Grow in partial shade in moist, humus-rich, well-drained garden soil (Ph 5.5 - 6.4).

For moist rockeries and undergrowth woodland planting.

Goes well with Dodecatheon media, Saxifraga, Gaultheria, Heuchera, Podophyllum, Tiarella, and ferns.
