A botanical species native to the southwestern United States and Mexico, Penstemon pinifolius is an attractive small, evergreen bush which looks something like a miniature pine tree.
It produces vermilion tubular flowers in July-August which attract butterflies and the superb hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum).
As it can withstand summer drought and heat, pine-leaf penstemon is perfectly suited to an alpine rockery or to grow in a gravel garden, troughs or pots.
